SECOND DETECTION OF GRAVITATIONAL WAVES FROM BINARY BLACK HOLE MERGERS BY THE LIGO DETECTORS

Scientists were reported to have detected gravitational waves for the second time 26 December 2015, at the press briefing held in Moscow at the Sternberg Astronomical Institute in (GAISh) and in San Diego (American Astronomical Society) 15 June 2016 at 20:15 pm (Moscow time).

The waves were registered by both of the LIGO detectors (Laser Interferometric Gravitational-Wave Observatory).

Scientific research at LIGO is conducted within the framework of the LSC – LIGO scientific collaboration, a group of over 1000 scientists from the universities of the USA and 14 other countries. The MSU Faculty of Physics is represented by the group headed by the corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences V.B. Braginsky; professors V.P. Mitrofanov, I.A. Bilenko, S.P. Vyatchanin, M.L. Gorodetsky, F.Ya. Khalili, associate professor S.Y. Strighin and research assistant L.G. Prokhorov are members of the research group.
